Meta officially launched Muse on September 8, positioning it as an early step toward Zuckerberg’s broader vision of personal superintelligence. The product is initially rolling out in the United States through a dedicated app, with access also available through WhatsApp.

The launch puts Meta directly into a rapidly developing AI agent market. Unlike conventional chatbots, agents can interact with websites and connected applications to complete tasks. Meta says Muse can send emails, book travel, fill out forms, shop online and work toward longer-term goals with less step-by-step direction from the user.

How Meta Muse Is Designed to Work

At the center of Muse is what Meta calls the Muse Secure VM, a dedicated virtual computer running in the cloud. The environment contains the agent, its browser, data and credentials while keeping it isolated from other users and agents. This architecture is intended to give Muse the computing environment it needs to operate independently without exposing personal information unnecessarily.

Meta has also created a separate system called Sentinel to oversee Muse. Sentinel operates independently from the main agent and controls whether actions or data can reach the internet. According to Meta, the system can block an action or ask the user for permission when the requested operation requires additional authorization.

This matters because an AI that can send emails, make purchases or access personal services carries considerably more risk than an AI that simply generates text. Meta says Muse checks with users before sensitive actions, while connected applications can be disconnected whenever the user chooses. Passwords and payment information are also kept in secure storage rather than being directly visible to Muse.

Muse is powered by Meta’s Muse Spark model family, with the company having released Muse Spark 1.3 just days before the product launch. Meta says the updated model was designed to improve longer-horizon agentic work, including managing multiple workflows and correcting gaps in its own plans.

Why Muse Matters for Meta’s AI Strategy

The bigger ambition extends beyond individual tasks. Zuckerberg wants personal AI agents to become systems that understand what matters to each person and proactively help them achieve their goals. Muse can remember user preferences and use information from previous interactions to make suggestions without requiring the user to repeat every detail.

That could change how people interact with software. Instead of opening several applications to compare prices, organize travel or manage schedules, a user could give Muse the objective and allow the agent to coordinate the work.

Meta is also trying to make Muse accessible to mainstream consumers rather than limiting AI agents to technical or professional users. The company says the product is free for most usage, while subscription plans are available for people who need substantially more computing capacity.

Security will likely determine how quickly that vision becomes reality. Reuters reported that internal Meta testing produced mixed results, including complaints about disconnections and incidents involving sensitive information. Those reports underline the central challenge facing every personal AI agent: users must trust software with increasingly powerful access to their digital lives.

Meta says it has operated a bug bounty program for Muse since early development and is now making the program public. The company is also planning Muse Confidential VM, an upgraded environment designed to encrypt the entire virtual machine with a key controlled by the user.

For the AI industry, Muse represents an important shift from conversational assistants toward autonomous software that can actually execute tasks. Meta has an unusual distribution advantage through WhatsApp and its wider consumer ecosystem, giving it a potential path to reach people who have never used advanced AI agents before.

The bigger question is whether consumers will be comfortable giving an autonomous agent access to their email, shopping accounts, calendars and other services. Muse may eventually make digital tasks considerably easier, but its success will depend on whether Meta can demonstrate that convenience does not come at the expense of control, privacy and security.
