Symbiosis Halts Bitcoin Routes After Security Incident

Symbiosis has halted its Bitcoin Bridge after reporting a security incident early on September 11, 2026. According to the protocol, an attacker exploited a vulnerability at approximately 04:28 UTC, prompting the team to stop BTC-related routes while it investigates the incident.

The project said the affected component is isolated from the rest of its infrastructure. EVM routes, along with TRON, TON and other supported networks, remain operational according to the team’s statement. Symbiosis also said Octopools and other protocol components were not affected.

The incident comes as cross-chain bridges remain a major security focus for the crypto industry. Symbiosis’ Bitcoin Bridge is designed to move assets between Bitcoin and other networks, with the protocol previously describing the service as non-custodial and capable of delivering native BTC rather than a wrapped representation.

On-chain security monitors have also reported suspicious activity connected to Symbiosis BridgeV2 on BNB Chain. One report said an abnormal message was used to mint an extremely large amount of syBTC, while approximately 4.39 WBTC was later sold on Ethereum for roughly $336,000.

That on-chain activity adds another layer to the investigation, although Symbiosis’ initial public statement did not provide a final loss figure. The team said its accounting remains underway and that confirmed numbers will be published in a subsequent update.

Recovery Efforts and LP Compensation

Symbiosis said it has recovered approximately 15 BTC and moved the assets into a team-controlled multisig wallet. The recovery is an important development, but it does not mean the full amount affected by the incident has been recovered.

The protocol has also contacted the attacker with a white-hat bounty offer worth 20% of recovered funds. That offer remains open until September 13, after which Symbiosis said the same 20% bounty will be offered to anyone who provides information that results in additional recovery.

Liquidity providers are another major concern following the incident. Symbiosis said it is contacting every affected LP directly and is preparing a compensation framework that will outline how affected users will be handled.

The distinction between the Bitcoin Bridge and the wider Symbiosis system will also be closely watched by users. The protocol says other routes remain operational, while its public infrastructure describes Symbiosis as a cross-chain routing system spanning dozens of networks and liquidity sources.

For users, the immediate issue is therefore not simply whether Symbiosis remains operational, but whether the affected bridge can be secured before BTC transfers resume. The protocol has not announced a restart time for the Bitcoin Bridge, meaning users should treat the halted route as unavailable until an official update confirms otherwise.

The incident also highlights the specific risks created when cross-chain infrastructure connects different blockchain environments. A vulnerability in a bridge component can potentially affect synthetic assets, liquidity pools and settlement mechanisms even when the underlying Bitcoin network or other connected blockchains are functioning normally.

Symbiosis said its relayer group continues to operate and secure the network while the investigation proceeds. The team has also thanked security researchers who responded quickly, suggesting that external monitoring and coordinated disclosure are already playing a role in the recovery effort.

For now, the key figures remain preliminary: approximately 15 BTC recovered, a 20% white-hat bounty offered, and the final accounting still pending. Symbiosis has not yet published the confirmed total loss or finalized compensation terms for affected liquidity providers.

The next update should therefore be important for determining the full scope of the exploit, the amount ultimately recovered and the conditions required before Bitcoin routes can safely reopen. Until those details are confirmed, the incident remains an active security investigation rather than a completed recovery.

For the wider crypto market, the episode is another reminder that bridge security remains a critical risk even when most of a protocol’s infrastructure continues operating normally. Symbiosis’ decision to isolate the Bitcoin Bridge and halt BTC routes gives the team time to investigate without necessarily shutting down the entire cross-chain network.
