Data-Driven Trust: IOTA Secures the Future of Product Transparency with New Passport Solution

In a move set to revolutionize transparency and sustainability in global supply chains, the IOTA Foundation and Eviden, a leader in digital transformation solutions from the Atos Group, have announced the launch of the Eviden Digital Passport Solution (EDPS). This first-of-its-kind offering leverages blockchain technology to create a comprehensive digital record of a product’s life cycle, from its raw materials to its eventual disposal.

EDPS operates using Digital Product Passports (DPPs), essentially digital birth certificates for products that track their entire journey. These passports contain detailed information on sourcing, manufacturing processes, and usage patterns. This level of transparency empowers businesses to ensure accountability throughout the product life cycle, fostering a more sustainable and ethical supply chain.

“The EDPS represents a significant leap forward in supply chain traceability,” said Micah Zimmerman, a technology journalist following the development. “By providing a secure and immutable record of a product’s journey, EDPS empowers consumers to make informed purchasing decisions and hold manufacturers accountable for their environmental and social impact.”

The solution streamlines compliance with regulations like the EU Battery Directive and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. Additionally, EDPS promotes a circular economy by facilitating the efficient management and reuse of materials.

EDPS is comprised of two key components: the Passport Creator and the Passport Distributor. The Passport Creator, equipped with a blockchain node, allows manufacturers to capture crucial data at the product’s inception. The Passport Distributor, accessible via web and app platforms, makes EDPS participation accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

While initially focusing on electric vehicle (EV) batteries, EDPS has ambitious expansion plans. The solution is slated to be adopted across various sectors, including manufacturing, fashion, and even the food industry.

The partnership between IOTA and Eviden unlocks a multitude of benefits for businesses and consumers alike. EDPS empowers data-driven decision-making, facilitates life cycle tracking, and unlocks the potential for future use cases based on the rich data collected throughout a product’s lifespan.

Underpinning EDPS is IOTA’s Tangle technology, renowned for its scalability and efficiency. Tangle ensures secure and tamper-proof transaction recording, guaranteeing data integrity within the EDPS.

This collaboration is expected to be a catalyst for innovation. Experts anticipate it will pave the way for further exploration of IOTA’s technology in areas like global digital trade and data monetization.

“This partnership is a testament to the power of collaboration,” said Dominik Schiener, co-founder and chair of the IOTA Foundation. “EDPS combines the strengths of both IOTA and Eviden, creating a powerful solution that fosters trust and transparency in the global marketplace.”

Udo Littke, Head of Evidence Central Europe for the Atos Group, echoed this sentiment. “This groundbreaking technology lays the foundation for a more open, fair, and secure infrastructure that empowers informed choices and promotes a sustainable future,” he concluded.
