## Argentinian Lawmakers Take Action on LIBRA Token Investigation
In a significant move, Argentinian lawmakers in the lower house have initiated a commission to investigate President Javier Milei’s connection to the LIBRA token, which faced a rug-pull following Milei’s promotion of it on social media. The deputies voted 128 to 93 in favor of establishing the special commission, a proposal that had previously failed to gain traction in the Senate. President Milei has consistently asserted his innocence, labeling the investigation as a classic political witch hunt.
Back in February, Milei shared an enthusiastic post about the LIBRA token, expressing his belief that the project would invigorate the Argentinian economy. The lower house has since conducted a series of votes aimed at probing President Milei’s alleged involvement with the LIBRA crypto initiative. Among the votes, opposition lawmakers successfully called for the summoning of key government officials, including Economic Minister Luis Caputo and the head of the National Securities Commission, Roberto Silva. This request garnered 131 votes in favor and 96 against. Additionally, another vote seeking information from the Executive Branch regarding the crypto affair passed with 135 votes in favor and 84 opposed.
The opposition’s efforts to summon high-ranking officials from Milei’s administration and obtain crucial documents related to the LIBRA affair have been successful. During the debate, Representative Pablo Juliano emphasized the importance of Congress addressing the issue to determine whether the LIBRA affair has had detrimental effects on the country. Following the emergence of the LIBRA scandal, Milei quickly distanced himself from the project, claiming he had no personal involvement. However, opposition leaders remain skeptical, pointing to photographs of Milei with the LIBRA developer as evidence of his connection.
The opposition parties in Argentina have seized this opportunity to challenge Milei’s administration. The president has dismissed the situation as a mere political game, while opposition leaders argue that he was involved in a financial scam that warrants investigation. Former President Cristina Kirchner has dubbed the incident “cryptogate,” accusing President Milei of complicating the situation further.
In March, an Argentine lawyer called for the arrest of Hayden Davis, who introduced the LIBRA project to Milei in January. Additionally, a New York law firm has reached out to LIBRA investors to initiate a lawsuit related to the token’s crash. Hayden Davis, the owner of Kelsier, the company behind the LIBRA token launch, has accused Milei of betrayal after the president distanced himself from the project following the scandal, asserting that he had served as an advisor to Milei.
Opposition leaders in Argentina are leveraging this information as a foundation for their investigation, convinced that there are deeper layers to this story yet to be uncovered.
