Metaplanet Surpasses El Salvador in Bitcoin Holdings with $707M Treasury

Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has officially outpaced El Salvador in total Bitcoin holdings, securing its place among the world’s top institutional BTC accumulators.

In a bold move announced on May 12, Metaplanet revealed its latest purchase — 1,241 BTC acquired at approximately $101,843 per coin. This $129 million investment, their highest-value buy to date, has pushed their overall stash to 6,796 BTC, currently valued at roughly $707 million.

CEO Simon Gerovich shared the news enthusiastically on X, stating:

“Metaplanet now holds more Bitcoin than El Salvador. From humble beginnings to rivaling nation-states, we’re just getting started.”

Since kicking off its Bitcoin strategy in April 2024, the Tokyo-listed company has shown no signs of slowing down. In just a few months, it has become Asia’s largest corporate BTC holder and the tenth-largest globally, based on data from the Bitcoin Treasuries tracker BiTBO.

By comparison, El Salvador — the first nation to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender — currently holds 6,714 BTC, worth around $642 million, according to its National Bitcoin Office.

Metaplanet’s recent activity includes an aggressive string of purchases:

  • May 7: Acquired 5,555 BTC
  • April: Made four separate buys totaling 18,586 BTC
  • March: Conducted six buys adding up to 18,925 BTC

These consistent acquisitions have propelled Metaplanet’s BTC Yield — a metric reflecting Bitcoin growth per fully diluted share — to 38% for Q2 so far, following an impressive 95.6% yield in Q1 of 2025.

Meanwhile, across the Pacific, Bitcoin heavyweight Michael Saylor appears to be teasing another acquisition. On May 12, Saylor posted a cryptic “Connect the dots” message on X, along with a snapshot from the Saylor Tracker, a tool monitoring the BTC reserves of his firm Strategy. These types of Monday hints from Saylor have historically preceded Bitcoin purchase announcements.

As it stands, Strategy remains the world’s top BTC holder among corporations, with 555,450 BTC valued at approximately $57.8 billion.
