Kenya has taken a major step toward modernizing its education infrastructure by launching a blockchain-based academic credential verification system powered by Avalanche. The initiative enables millions of academic records issued by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to become digitally verifiable, tamper-resistant, and accessible through a secure online platform.

According to Avalanche, the new system transforms how students, employers, universities, and government institutions verify educational qualifications by replacing lengthy manual verification processes with cryptographic proof secured on the blockchain.

The rollout represents another example of public sector blockchain adoption, with Avalanche increasingly being used to support national record-keeping systems around the world.

Millions of Academic Records Move to Blockchain

The new platform initially secures more than 15 million academic records, including certificates dating back to 1989, while future expansion is expected to increase the database to approximately 35 million verifiable credentials.

The system covers several categories of educational qualifications, including:

  • Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) records
  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) records
  • Advanced diploma qualifications
  • Government teacher certification programs

In addition, nearly one million KCSE 2025 certificates are now being issued exclusively through the new electronic certification platform.

Instead of relying on paper certificates or centralized databases, every academic record is anchored on Avalanche’s C-Chain. This creates a permanent cryptographic record that allows authorized users to verify certificates instantly while making unauthorized alterations significantly more difficult.

The platform is designed to reduce certificate fraud, eliminate reliance on manual verification requests, and simplify credential validation for employers, universities, and other institutions.

Faster Verification and Growing Government Blockchain Adoption

Traditionally, verifying academic qualifications in Kenya could take weeks or even months, particularly for organizations conducting large-scale recruitment exercises.

With the blockchain-based verification system, academic records can now be authenticated within seconds through a secure online portal.

According to KNEC Chief Executive Officer Dr. David Njengere, candidates no longer need to depend solely on physical certificates, as they can securely access, download, and verify their academic credentials digitally.

The initiative also builds on Avalanche’s growing portfolio of government-focused blockchain projects. The network has previously supported land record digitization in India’s Dantewada district, vehicle title management for California’s Department of Motor Vehicles, and property deed tokenization in Bergen County, New Jersey.

Avalanche says these deployments demonstrate how blockchain infrastructure is increasingly being adopted for public records that require transparency, auditability, and resistance to tampering.

For Kenya, the new academic verification platform provides a long-term digital foundation for educational credentials while reducing administrative delays and improving trust in certificate verification for employers and institutions both domestically and internationally.
