Ripple Adds Stripe and Tempo’s AI Payment Standard to XRP Ledger Starter Kit
Ripple has expanded the XRP Ledger’s tools for AI-powered payments with an update that allows software agents to pay for online services using XRP and RLUSD. Version 1.1 of the XRP Ledger AI Starter Kit adds support for the Machine Payments Protocol, or MPP, developed by Stripe and Tempo.
The update targets a growing category of applications in which AI agents can request data, computing resources and other digital services and settle payments without requiring a person to approve every individual transaction. The software remains in beta, making the release primarily a developer-focused expansion rather than evidence of widespread commercial adoption.
XRP Ledger Adds Machine Payment Support
MPP is designed around a simple interaction between an online service and an autonomous software agent. A service can return the price required for a particular resource, after which the agent authorizes payment and receives access to the requested service. This creates a payment flow designed specifically for software that can act on a user’s behalf.
Ripple’s updated starter kit adds MPP alongside the Open Wallet Standard. The latter provides a common interface for software to manage wallets across multiple blockchains, while allowing agents to request transactions without directly receiving access to the wallet’s private keys.
The security model includes controls such as spending limits and approved destinations. These restrictions are particularly relevant when an AI system is allowed to spend money autonomously because developers can establish boundaries around how much an agent can spend and where payments can be sent.

XRP is supported for both individual payments and ongoing payment sessions. The session functionality is important for services that may charge an agent repeatedly while it consumes a resource, such as computing capacity, data or another metered digital service.
RLUSD is also supported for payments through the updated kit. Ripple’s stablecoin already operates on the XRP Ledger using the network’s native issued-token functionality, giving developers a dollar-denominated option alongside XRP for agentic payment applications.
However, there is an important distinction between the current XRP and stablecoin functionality. According to the developer documentation surrounding the release, ongoing payment sessions currently support XRP, while extending those sessions to stablecoins requires a proposed XRP Ledger upgrade that has not yet been activated.
Ripple Expands Its AI Payments Strategy
The MPP integration adds another route for developers building machine-payment applications on XRPL. Ripple previously introduced support for the X402 payment standard in the initial AI Starter Kit, giving developers a separate framework for agents to pay for APIs, AI inference and other digital services with XRP or RLUSD.
Supporting multiple standards gives Ripple a broader development strategy as the market works out how autonomous software should discover services, authorize payments and settle transactions. MPP was co-created by Stripe and Tempo, while X402 represents a separate payment standard that Ripple already supports.
The potential use cases extend beyond AI chatbots. An autonomous agent could theoretically purchase access to a data feed, pay for computing time or settle a small service charge as part of a larger task without requiring a human to manually initiate every payment.

That model also creates a different requirement for digital wallets. Traditional wallets are designed around humans approving transactions, while autonomous agents need programmable spending controls and clearly defined permissions. The Open Wallet Standard integration is intended to address that problem while keeping private keys outside the agent’s direct control.
The technology is still at an early stage, however. Ripple has not disclosed commercial payment volumes from the new MPP integration, and the beta status means developers are still testing the implementation and determining which agentic payment applications can move into production.
For XRP, the development creates another potential utility path around machine-to-machine commerce. For RLUSD, it provides a route into applications that need dollar-denominated payments. Whether either becomes widely used by autonomous agents will depend on developer adoption, service-provider acceptance and the reliability of the underlying payment infrastructure.
The latest update therefore represents a technical expansion rather than a confirmed adoption milestone. Ripple is positioning the XRP Ledger as infrastructure for both human and machine payments, while the combination of XRP, RLUSD, MPP and Open Wallet Standard gives developers more tools for building autonomous payment systems. The next test will be whether those tools move from beta implementations into sustained real-world usage.
