Cardano Leios Hits 1,000 TPS as Mastercard Partnership and Plutus Shift Advance

Cardano is entering another important development phase with progress on three fronts: Ouroboros Leios has demonstrated roughly 1,000 simple transactions per second in testing, the Cardano Foundation has joined Mastercard’s Crypto Partner Program, and Plutus engineering is moving to Midgard Labs.

The three developments cover different parts of the ecosystem. Leios addresses network throughput, the Mastercard program focuses on payments and digital-asset infrastructure, while the Plutus transition changes how a core part of Cardano’s smart-contract engineering is maintained.

The Leios figure has attracted particular attention because Cardano’s current mainnet capacity is far below the demonstrated test result. During a recent demonstration, a Leios node reached 250 TxkB/s on a local cluster, equivalent to approximately 1,000 simple 250-byte transactions per second.

Leios Demonstrates Higher Throughput

The demonstration was conducted with a local cluster and emulated round-trip times, meaning the result should be viewed as a development benchmark rather than evidence that Cardano mainnet can currently process 1,000 TPS.

Cardano’s own documentation describes Linear Leios as a throughput extension that allows block producers to publish larger endorser blocks alongside regular Praos blocks. A stake-weighted committee then validates those blocks before their transactions become part of the ledger.

The latest demonstration is nevertheless significant because it shows the scaling architecture operating at a level substantially above the network’s present capacity. Cardano community reporting put current mainnet throughput at roughly 4.5 TxkB/s, compared with the 250 TxkB/s reached in the Leios test.

Leios remains part of Cardano’s development roadmap rather than an immediately available mainnet upgrade. Cardano says Linear Leios is the headline feature of Phase 1 of the Dijkstra hard fork, with activation dependent on governance and subsequent technical steps.

IOG has previously said that Leios could increase Cardano’s throughput capacity by between 10 and 65 times through a phased rollout. The actual performance achieved on mainnet will depend on network conditions, configuration and the final implementation.

At the same time, the Cardano Foundation has expanded its connection with the traditional financial sector by joining Mastercard’s Crypto Partner Program. The Foundation said it will engage with Mastercard and other participants on cross-border payments, B2B transactions, settlement and stablecoins.

Mastercard and Plutus Add Institutional Focus

The Mastercard relationship does not mean Mastercard has adopted ADA as a payment currency or that Cardano is being integrated into Mastercard’s entire payment network. Instead, the Foundation is participating in the program’s Blockchains track and exploring areas where blockchain infrastructure can work alongside existing financial systems.

That distinction is important as stablecoins and tokenized financial assets become increasingly relevant to payment companies and financial institutions. Cardano’s participation gives the ecosystem another channel through which its technology can be evaluated in these areas.

The third development concerns Cardano’s smart-contract infrastructure. From October 1, the existing Plutus engineering team will move from IO Labs to Midgard Labs, with both organizations collaborating during the transition.

Midgard Labs already develops and audits Plutus smart contracts and contributes to tooling and open-source libraries across the Cardano developer ecosystem. IOG said the transition is intended to preserve continuity while moving responsibility for Plutus to an independent specialist team.

The move is part of a wider engineering decentralization effort. Midgard Labs joins other specialist organizations working on major parts of Cardano’s technology stack, including teams responsible for Daedalus, Mithril, platform engineering and ledger development.

Taken together, the three developments show Cardano working on infrastructure, financial connectivity and engineering organization at the same time. Leios still needs to progress from controlled testing toward mainnet deployment, the Mastercard program is a partnership rather than a confirmed payment rollout, and the Plutus transition is an organizational change rather than a new protocol feature.

For ADA holders and developers, the important question is how these initiatives translate into measurable network activity. Higher throughput could support more applications if deployed successfully, financial partnerships could create additional use cases, and a broader group of independent engineering teams could change how Cardano’s core software is developed.
