Starknet is exploring a major change to its blockchain architecture that could see the Ethereum Layer 2 network evolve into an independent, post-quantum Layer 1 blockchain. A governance poll opened on October 15, 2026, asking STRK holders whether they support further research into the proposal. The non-binding vote follows discussions initiated by StarkWare earlier in October and could shape the network’s long-term approach to security, decentralization and its relationship with Ethereum.
Starknet Explores Independence to Strengthen Quantum Security
The proposal centers on a technical challenge facing Ethereum-based Layer 2 networks. Although Starknet’s own technology already incorporates quantum-resistant cryptographic components, certain functions still depend on Ethereum, including its bridge and data availability arrangements. According to the governance post, moving toward an independent Layer 1 could give Starknet greater control over these components and allow it to determine its own security roadmap.
Starknet uses STARK proofs, a cryptographic technology designed to provide security against attacks from quantum computers when implemented with appropriate parameters and assumptions. The network also supports native account abstraction, which allows accounts to use programmable transaction validation mechanisms. The proposal states that user accounts can adopt post-quantum signatures without requiring a protocol upgrade, although the broader system’s quantum readiness depends on additional components.
The potential transition does not mean Starknet has already decided to leave Ethereum. The current poll is explicitly non-binding and is intended to measure STRK holders’ interest in exploring the idea. If voters support further research, the process would move toward more detailed proposals and additional governance votes before any final decision or implementation.
The proposal also states that STRK would remain the network’s token, with no new token introduced as part of the contemplated direction. Bridges connecting Ethereum and Starknet would also remain open. These commitments address two important questions for existing users: whether the transition would require adopting a replacement token and whether connections to Ethereum would disappear.
STRK Governance Poll Raises Broader Questions About Decentralization
The governance discussion extends beyond quantum computing. Community responses have raised concerns about Starknet’s decentralization, consensus mechanism and token economics, suggesting that a potential Layer 1 transition could require broader architectural decisions. One forum participant argued that the existing Tendermint-based consensus arrangement should be overhauled and that the network should consider an alternative inspired by Ethereum’s consensus model.
That comment represents community feedback rather than an adopted technical decision. Nevertheless, it highlights the complexity of building an independent blockchain. Starknet would need to evaluate how its consensus mechanism, validator participation, transaction ordering and economic incentives would operate without relying on Ethereum for the same functions.
The relationship between security and decentralization is particularly important. An independent network could gain more control over its infrastructure, but it would also assume greater responsibility for maintaining its own security and resilience. The strength of a post-quantum design would therefore depend not only on cryptography but also on implementation quality, network operations and the distribution of control.
The poll is scheduled to run for seven days, with results becoming visible when voting closes. A Yes outcome would initiate further research, while a No result would leave Starknet’s post-quantum development focused on its existing Layer 2 model. A Neutral result would keep the discussion open until outstanding questions receive further answers.
For STRK holders, the decision concerns more than protection against a future quantum computing threat. It could influence Starknet’s technical direction, its dependence on Ethereum and the responsibilities associated with operating an independent blockchain. The proposal remains exploratory, and no implementation timeline has been established. Its significance will depend on the technical research, governance decisions and economic trade-offs that follow the initial poll.
