Charles Hoskinson Says Midnight Could Overtake Cardano as NIGHT Builds Its Own Market Narrative

Charles Hoskinson believes Midnight could eventually overtake Cardano in market capitalization, putting the spotlight on the relationship between the two blockchain projects and their respective tokens. In a statement circulating on November 8, the Cardano founder answered whether Midnight could become more valuable than ADA with a direct response: “It absolutely is” possible.

The comment has reignited discussion among Cardano investors, particularly as NIGHT develops a market identity separate from the ecosystem that helped create it. Some commentators see Midnight as a stronger opportunity for the current market cycle, while others question whether its growth could come at the expense of Cardano.

The comparison is significant because Midnight is not an unrelated blockchain competing for the same audience. It is a privacy-focused partner network developed within the wider Cardano ecosystem. Its success could therefore expand the ecosystem’s reach, even as NIGHT attracts capital that might otherwise have gone into ADA.

Market figures on November 8 put NIGHT’s capitalization at approximately $660 million to $670 million, depending on the data provider. Cardano, meanwhile, stood at roughly $6.7 billion. Midnight would therefore need to grow its market value by around ten times to match ADA at those levels.

Why Midnight Has a Different Investment Narrative

Midnight’s central proposition is programmable privacy. The network is designed to let applications process information while protecting sensitive data, with zero-knowledge cryptography supporting verification without requiring every underlying detail to be publicly exposed. This addresses a challenge facing blockchain adoption in areas such as finance, identity and enterprise applications.

Its architecture combines public verifiability with confidential data handling and selective disclosure. That distinction could be important for institutions and developers that want blockchain-based systems but cannot expose customer information, commercial records or transaction details on fully transparent networks. Midnight’s Compact programming language is intended to make these capabilities more accessible to developers.

The network also has a different positioning from Cardano’s original Layer 1 ambitions. Rather than relying primarily on the broad smart-contract platform narrative, Midnight is building around privacy infrastructure and applications that require controlled access to information. That gives NIGHT a distinct investment proposition, although its long-term value will depend on actual network usage rather than the strength of the narrative alone.

NIGHT also has a specific role in Midnight’s economic design. It is the network’s utility token and generates DUST, a resource used to support transaction capacity and smart-contract execution. DUST is designed to separate the cost of using the network from the direct transfer of NIGHT, creating a two-component token model.

For Midnight to challenge Cardano’s valuation, however, its technology must translate into sustained demand. Developers need to deploy useful applications, users need reasons to interact with them, and institutions must demonstrate that privacy-preserving infrastructure solves problems that existing networks cannot address as effectively. A compelling technical proposition is a starting point, not a guarantee of market leadership.

What NIGHT Would Need to Flip ADA

The market-cap comparison puts the scale of the challenge into perspective. At approximately $660 million, NIGHT remains more than $6 billion behind ADA. With around 16.6 billion NIGHT tokens in circulation, matching a $6.7 billion Cardano valuation would imply a NIGHT price of roughly $0.40, assuming circulating supply remained unchanged. That is approximately ten times the token’s quoted price near $0.04.

Supply dynamics also matter. Midnight has a maximum supply of 24 billion NIGHT, compared with Cardano’s maximum supply of 45 billion ADA. Market capitalization is calculated using circulating supply and price, so comparing the two tokens by unit price alone would produce a misleading picture. Future changes in circulating supply could also affect the price required for NIGHT to reach ADA’s valuation.

The bullish argument is that privacy could become a major blockchain investment theme as financial institutions, businesses and users demand systems that combine transparency with confidentiality. If Midnight captures meaningful activity in these markets, NIGHT could develop demand beyond speculative interest. That is the opportunity supporters see when they describe it as a potential alternative to ADA for this cycle.

There are also risks. Midnight must compete with established privacy technologies and other networks seeking institutional adoption. Its token valuation could rise faster than underlying usage, while market conditions, liquidity, token distribution and competition could all affect its performance. Hoskinson’s statement establishes that he considers a flip possible, not that it is inevitable or imminent.

Ultimately, Midnight overtaking Cardano would be a major shift in the valuation of the wider ecosystem. It would suggest that investors are assigning greater value to programmable privacy than to Cardano’s established Layer 1 proposition. Whether that happens will depend less on social media predictions and more on Midnight’s ability to turn its technical architecture into applications, users and durable economic activity.
