Pi Network is putting greater emphasis on the infrastructure behind its application ecosystem, introducing new developer capabilities that could make it easier to build more useful apps for Pioneers. The September 4 update added local storage, app-specific staking data and file and video sharing, while also bringing Pi’s developer resources together in a new documentation hub.
The changes may appear technical, but they matter because developer infrastructure ultimately determines what applications can be built on a network. Pi has increasingly focused on utility rather than simply expanding its user base, and better development tools could help turn that strategy into more practical products.
Pi Network Gives Developers More Building Blocks
The new local storage capability allows selected whitelisted applications in Pi Browser to keep certain information directly on a Pioneer’s device. Preferences and session information, for example, can be stored locally without requiring developers to maintain their own backend infrastructure for those functions. Pi says the data remains on the device rather than being uploaded to Pi servers.
There are limitations. Local storage is initially available only to whitelisted applications, and storage capacity is limited. Data can also be removed when the available space becomes full, meaning developers cannot treat the feature as permanent database storage. It is better understood as another tool for managing application state and reducing unnecessary backend requirements.

Pi has also introduced an API that gives developers access to app-specific staking information through Ecosystem Directory Staking. The API can show the effective amount a user has staked for a particular application, including the effect of staking duration. That could allow developers to build features around community participation and app-specific engagement.
File and video sharing is another addition. Through Pi.shareFile, developers can allow users to share files or videos directly from applications using the device’s native sharing functionality. Potential applications include marketplaces where users need to submit images or receipts, as well as games and content platforms where users want to share clips.
These additions build on other infrastructure Pi has introduced during 2026. The network previously added persistent backend storage to newly created Pi App Studio applications, while Pi payments have also been made easier to integrate through developer libraries. Together, the changes suggest a broader effort to give developers more complete tools for building applications around Pi.
OpenPay Shows How the New Tools Could Be Used
OpenPay has already highlighted the new capabilities, saying its Pi integration includes Pi Authentication, Pi Payments and Pi File & Video Sharing. The project said local storage and staking data were awaiting whitelisting, illustrating how developers can progressively adopt the capabilities as access expands.
The more important development, however, is Pi’s new documentation structure. Pi says its developer resources were previously spread across SDK documentation, guides and a GitHub repository. The new documentation consolidates those resources and organizes the development process from registration and sandbox testing through feature integration and eventual Mainnet launch.
That matters because documentation is often an overlooked barrier for developers. Even capable APIs can remain underused if developers struggle to understand how the pieces fit together. A single, updated source could reduce that friction and make it easier for new teams to move from experimenting with Pi to actually launching applications.

Pi currently promotes its developer platform as a way to reach more than 60 million members, with tools covering authentication, payments, SDKs and app development. The network’s developer portal also emphasizes access to Pi Browser, built-in wallets and relatively simple integration for teams that may not have extensive blockchain experience.
The key question now is whether better infrastructure produces better applications. More APIs and developer tools do not automatically create sustainable demand for PI. Developers still need to build products that users find useful, while those applications need activity, retention and economic models capable of supporting long-term growth.
For the Pi community, this is therefore a development worth watching beyond short-term market movements. The network is gradually expanding the technical foundation available to application builders, while features such as Ecosystem Directory Staking give developers additional ways to connect applications with the Pi community.
If these improvements lead to more functional applications and greater Mainnet activity, they could strengthen Pi’s utility narrative heading into the final months of 2026. The next stage will be measuring what developers actually build with the new capabilities. For Pi, that may ultimately be more important than the number of features released.
