THORChain is moving closer to integrating Zcash (ZEC), with its network nodes beginning preparations to scan the Zcash blockchain ahead of the next scheduled churn. The update confirms that every THORChain node is running its own Zcash full node, allowing operators to independently examine blockchain activity and report their findings to the network. The scanning process is an important readiness step before ZEC can be activated for cross-chain transactions, with the integration expected to proceed once the network’s scanners are operating reliably.
The development introduces another potential asset to THORChain’s cross-chain infrastructure, which enables users to swap digital assets across supported blockchain networks without relying on centralized exchanges. Zcash brings a privacy-focused blockchain into the integration process, creating additional technical considerations for transaction monitoring, asset transfers and network compatibility. THORChain’s approach is to first ensure that individual nodes can successfully scan the Zcash blockchain before enabling ZEC at a network churn.
THORChain Nodes Begin Scanning Zcash Ahead of Network Churn
According to THORChain’s latest update, its nodes are preparing for ZEC integration by running independent Zcash full nodes and beginning blockchain scans. Each THORChain node will examine the Zcash network and report its observations, allowing the wider protocol to assess whether the infrastructure is ready for activation. This process is intended to identify potential synchronization or scanning issues before ZEC becomes available on the network.
Running independent full nodes is an important part of the preparation because it allows THORChain operators to maintain their own view of the Zcash blockchain. Rather than depending entirely on a single external data provider, each node can independently monitor blockchain activity and verify relevant information.

The scanning phase also gives operators an opportunity to identify technical problems that could affect transaction processing once the integration is activated.
THORChain has indicated that scanning must be completed before ZEC can be switched on during the next churn. Churning is the protocol’s process of rotating node operators and updating network membership, which also provides an opportunity to introduce supported blockchain integrations.

Before activation, the network needs to establish that the relevant infrastructure is functioning correctly and that participating nodes can reliably observe the Zcash blockchain.
The current scanning phase does not mean that ZEC is already live for swaps on THORChain. Instead, it represents a technical preparation stage designed to ensure that the network is ready for the next step. THORChain’s announcement makes the health of the scanners a key condition for proceeding, meaning that successful synchronization and reliable reporting will be important indicators of integration readiness.
ZEC Integration Could Expand THORChain’s Cross-Chain Capabilities
Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that uses zero-knowledge cryptography to support shielded transactions. Its privacy features distinguish it from many transparent blockchain networks, where transaction details and wallet activity can be publicly inspected. Integrating ZEC into THORChain therefore involves ensuring that the protocol can correctly identify and process the transactions required for cross-chain operations while accounting for Zcash’s distinct blockchain architecture.
THORChain’s infrastructure is designed to facilitate native asset swaps across different blockchains, allowing users to exchange supported cryptocurrencies without wrapping them into conventional tokens on a separate network. Adding ZEC could extend these capabilities to Zcash holders, potentially providing another route to exchange the asset for cryptocurrencies supported by THORChain. The actual functionality available at launch will depend on the completed integration and the transaction types supported by the protocol.

The privacy characteristics of Zcash also make the integration technically distinctive. Zcash supports both transparent and shielded transactions, and the information available to blockchain scanners can differ depending on the transaction type. THORChain’s scanning and verification infrastructure must therefore be able to handle the relevant transaction data required for its supported ZEC operations. The latest announcement focuses on node readiness and blockchain scanning, rather than providing a complete breakdown of which Zcash transaction types will be supported.
For THORChain, the immediate priority is ensuring that all participating nodes can reliably scan Zcash and report their findings before activation. Once the scanners are healthy and the required checks are completed, ZEC can be enabled at churn, subject to the network’s operational readiness. The integration’s progress will therefore depend on the results of the scanning phase and the network’s ability to coordinate activation across its node operators.
The development represents a further step in THORChain’s effort to expand the range of blockchains connected through its cross-chain infrastructure. If successfully activated, ZEC integration could give users another option for moving between supported digital assets while retaining Zcash’s role as a privacy-focused cryptocurrency. For now, the focus remains on node synchronization, scanning reliability and the technical checks needed before ZEC becomes operational on THORChain.
