Filecoin Tokenomics Update Cuts Daily FIL Supply Growth by 75%

Filecoin is introducing major changes to its tokenomics and business strategy, with updates targeting network rewards, token supply growth and demand for decentralized storage. In an announcement on October 15, 2026, Filecoin outlined the Solstice upgrade, the scheduled completion of vesting for allocations held by Protocol Labs and the Filecoin Foundation, and new products aimed at enterprise customers and AI agents. Together, these developments are intended to connect network rewards more closely to actual storage demand.

The changes address a central challenge for decentralized storage networks: attracting customers who pay for services rather than relying primarily on incentives for participants who secure and operate the network. Filecoin’s new approach shifts part of its reward structure toward customer acquisition and retention, while changes to vesting reduce the amount of newly unlocked FIL entering circulation each day.

Solstice Changes How Filecoin Distributes Rewards

Solstice, identified as Filecoin Improvement Proposal FIP-118, changes how block rewards are allocated. Under the new mechanics described by Filecoin, a growing share of rewards goes to services that bring paying customers onto the network, while a smaller share goes to consensus-only mining. Any portion allocated to services that is not earned is burned rather than distributed.

The change is designed to reward activity that generates demand for Filecoin’s storage services. Instead of treating consensus participation as the primary route to block rewards, the revised model gives greater importance to services that attract customers and retain their business. The intention is to strengthen the connection between network incentives and commercial use.

The burn mechanism also introduces a supply consequence. When service-related rewards go unearned, those tokens are removed instead of being paid out. The actual impact on FIL supply will depend on how much of the allocated reward remains unearned over time, alongside other factors affecting token issuance and circulation.

Filecoin is also completing the vesting schedule for allocations assigned to Protocol Labs and the Filecoin Foundation. According to figures cited in the announcement from FilecoinTLDR, the end of vesting is expected to reduce the daily amount of new FIL entering circulation by roughly 75%. The schedule was built into the network’s genesis arrangements in 2020, meaning the milestone represents a planned tokenomics change rather than an unexpected supply intervention.

A reduction in daily supply growth could alter the pace at which new FIL enters the market. However, it does not mean that 75% of the total supply is being removed, nor does it guarantee a price increase. Market prices also depend on demand, existing circulating supply, investor behavior and wider crypto-market conditions.

Filecoin Targets Enterprise and AI Storage Demand

Alongside the tokenomics changes, Integral Spacetime launched this week as a new storage neocloud business. According to Filecoin, the company plans to acquire businesses with substantial storage workloads and move that storage onto the Filecoin network. The strategy could bring existing storage demand onto the ecosystem through acquisitions rather than depending entirely on new customers choosing decentralized storage independently.

This approach matters because enterprise storage workloads can be large and recurring. If Integral Spacetime successfully migrates acquired workloads, it could create paying demand for network storage services. The announcement describes the company’s plan, however, and does not yet establish the amount of storage migrated, customer revenue generated or long-term demand secured.

Filecoin also highlighted products for enterprises and AI agents as part of its broader strategy. AI systems can create demand for storing datasets, model-related files and other digital assets, while businesses need reliable storage infrastructure for growing volumes of information. Filecoin’s challenge is to convert these potential use cases into sustained, paid network activity.

The combination of revised rewards, slower daily supply growth and enterprise-focused products points to a strategy that places greater emphasis on commercial demand. Solstice changes incentives, the end of vesting changes the rate of new token entry, and Integral Spacetime offers one route for bringing large workloads to the network.

For FIL holders and the wider Filecoin community, the key measures to watch will be paid storage growth, customer retention, the amount of rewards burned and actual changes in circulating supply. The announcements establish a new direction for Filecoin, but its success will depend on whether the tokenomics changes and business initiatives translate into lasting demand for decentralized storage.
