Ascend Markets and M1X Global have completed what they describe as the first institutional repurchase agreement (repo) on the Stellar blockchain, demonstrating how tokenized sovereign debt can support automated financing outside traditional banking hours. Announced on October 23, 2026, the transaction used USDM1, a US dollar-denominated sovereign bond issued onchain and backed 1:1 by short-duration US Treasury instruments.
The transaction featured 72 consecutive automated hourly repo rolls between October 16 and October 19, including overnight and weekend operations. According to the companies, the process ran without manual intervention, with the financing ultimately repaid and the USDM1 collateral returned successfully.
The agreement was executed through Ascend’s institutional credit facility using Stellar smart contracts. Its financing rate was set at the Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) plus 10 basis points, equivalent to an annualized rate of 3.98% for the transaction. The structure also included daily interest accrual, a 2% collateral haircut and a maximum loan-to-value ratio of 98%.
Stellar Brings Automated Repo Financing to Institutional Markets
Repurchase agreements are a core part of traditional financial markets. Institutions use them to obtain short-term financing against securities, fund trading positions and manage liquidity. The arrangement generally involves transferring securities as collateral in exchange for financing, with an agreement to repurchase those securities under specified terms.
Ascend and M1X Global sought to demonstrate that these established financing mechanics can operate on public blockchain infrastructure. Stellar smart contracts supported the transaction’s collateral pledging, financing, hourly renewals, repayment and collateral release.
The companies said the agreement operated under executed and enforceable master repurchase documentation, retaining contractual protections alongside programmable execution. Ascend’s infrastructure also incorporated identity verification, access permissions, compliance rules and operational controls intended for institutional use.
The transaction used Stellar Asset Contract (SAC) tokens for both sides of the arrangement and was executed directly on Stellar Mainnet. The companies reported that aggregate Stellar network fees for the automated hourly rolls amounted to a fraction of a cent, highlighting the low transaction costs associated with the specific operation.
Chainlink infrastructure also played a role. The trade used Chainlink’s new USDC Data Feeds on Stellar as its price oracle, while USDM1’s published par redemption value supported collateral valuation. The announcement does not disclose every technical detail of the valuation process or the full set of controls used to manage potential price and settlement risks.
USDM1 and Stellar Target Continuous Institutional Finance
USDM1 is issued onchain by the Republic of the Marshall Islands under New York law. According to its issuer’s description, the bond is backed on a 1:1 basis by short-duration US Treasury instruments held in a bankruptcy-remote structure. It is designed to be compatible with established legal frameworks used for derivatives, repo and securities lending.
Tokenizing sovereign debt can make collateral easier to transfer and manage through digital systems. In a continuously operating blockchain environment, institutions could potentially mobilize eligible assets beyond conventional settlement windows, although practical adoption still depends on custody arrangements, legal enforceability, regulatory requirements and counterparty risk controls.
Ascend CEO Dennis O’Connell described the transaction as a demonstration that repo financing can operate continuously on Stellar while preserving institutional documentation and compliance processes. M1X Global President and COO Jordan Goldman said programmable financing could allow institutions to use collateral more efficiently and support additional financing activity from an existing asset pool.
The firms have not disclosed the transaction’s principal amount, so its financial scale cannot be assessed from the announcement alone. The successful execution of 72 automated rolls demonstrates a technical and operational capability, but does not by itself establish that the model has reached broad institutional adoption.
For Stellar, the transaction adds an institutional financing use case to a network widely used for digital asset transfers and payments. For the wider tokenization sector, it offers an example of how sovereign debt instruments may be integrated into programmable capital markets.
The next test will be whether similar transactions can be repeated at greater scale with additional institutions and collateral types. If adoption expands, automated repo markets could offer another way to connect traditional financial instruments with blockchain-based settlement, while remaining subject to the legal, operational and liquidity requirements of institutional finance.
