VeChain is preparing for one of the most important technical upgrades in the VeChainThor blockchain’s history. The Interstellar hardfork is scheduled for September 16, bringing major changes to the network’s Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) capabilities.
The upgrade follows VeChain’s broader Renaissance roadmap, which has focused on strengthening the network’s consensus, economics and developer infrastructure. With Interstellar, the focus shifts toward making VeChainThor more compatible with the wider Ethereum development ecosystem.
Interstellar Opens VeChainThor to More Developers
VeChain says its original goal was simple: make blockchain useful in the real world. That focus initially centered on businesses, products and data before expanding toward consumers, developers, sustainability applications and broader participation across the network.
Interstellar takes that same philosophy into a much larger developer market. VeChainThor’s EVM will be upgraded toward the Ethereum Cancun, Prague and Osaka rulesets, closing a significant compatibility gap that has existed since the network’s previous Shanghai-aligned upgrade.
For developers, the practical benefit is access to newer EVM capabilities and a more familiar technical environment. The upgrade supports features including transient storage, the MCOPY instruction, BLS12-381 cryptography and secp256r1 signature verification.

That matters because developer adoption is often influenced by friction. The more familiar the tooling, programming environment and contract infrastructure, the easier it becomes for teams to test an idea, move an application and begin building without creating an entirely separate technical stack.
VeChain has therefore positioned Interstellar as more than another protocol update. The objective is to widen the funnel through which developers, applications and users can enter the VeChainThor ecosystem while preserving the network’s existing architecture.
The upgrade does not, however, make VeChainThor completely identical to Ethereum. VeChain’s technical documentation states that Ethereum transaction equivalence is not part of this hardfork and will be addressed through a separate future upgrade. Blob transactions are also not included in Interstellar.
A Bigger Developer Funnel Could Matter for VET
The timing is significant because Interstellar is scheduled to activate at mainnet block 25,902,540, estimated for September 16 at approximately 11:15 UTC. Node operators must upgrade to the v2.5.0 release before activation in order to remain on the canonical chain.
For ordinary VET holders, the upgrade does not require a token migration or a change to the VET contract. VET remains the native asset of VeChainThor, while the Interstellar changes operate at the underlying network and EVM level.
The larger question is what developers do with the additional capabilities. Better compatibility does not automatically produce applications, users or transaction activity, but it can remove technical barriers that previously made competing EVM networks easier choices for some development teams.
That creates a potential compounding effect for VeChain. More accessible development can lead to more applications, while useful applications can attract users and transactions. If that activity grows, the network becomes more relevant to businesses looking for blockchain infrastructure.

Interstellar also gives VeChain a stronger technical foundation for applications requiring newer cryptographic capabilities. Support for secp256r1 and BLS12-381, alongside other EVM improvements, expands the types of smart-contract functionality developers can implement directly on VeChainThor.
For the VeChain community, the upgrade represents the next stage after the network’s earlier Renaissance changes. Galactica modernized its EVM foundations, Hayabusa changed its consensus and economic model, and Interstellar now targets broader compatibility with the Ethereum ecosystem.
The immediate significance for VET is therefore not a guaranteed price reaction but the possibility of a larger addressable developer market. VeChain spent much of its first decade building around real-world blockchain applications. Interstellar is an attempt to make that experience available to a much wider pool of builders.
