VeChain is entering the next stage of its Renaissance roadmap, and this time the focus is firmly on developers.
After Galactica upgraded VeChainThor’s EVM foundations and Hayabusa changed the network’s consensus and staking model, Interstellar is now targeting deeper compatibility with Ethereum.
The first proposal, VIP-255, brings a collection of EVM improvements based on Ethereum’s Cancun, Prague and Osaka upgrades. VeChain says the goal is straightforward: make it easier for developers to bring modern Ethereum applications, tools and infrastructure to VeChainThor.
For the VeChain community, this could become one of the more important technical developments of the Renaissance roadmap.
VIP-255 Is About More Than a Few New EVM Features
VIP-255 introduces several changes designed to narrow the technical gap between VeChainThor and the broader Ethereum ecosystem.
Among them are transient storage through TLOAD and TSTORE, MCOPY, CLZ, updated SELFDESTRUCT behavior and improved MODEXP safeguards. The proposal also adds native support for cryptographic operations involving BLS12-381 and secp256r1.
The cryptography changes could be particularly useful.
Native secp256r1 support can make it easier to build applications around technologies such as passkeys, WebAuthn and hardware-backed authentication. BLS12-381 support, meanwhile, is relevant to areas including zero-knowledge applications, signature aggregation and interoperability.

This gives VeChainThor more tools for applications that go beyond traditional token transfers.
And that is important because VeChain’s 2026 roadmap is increasingly focused on becoming infrastructure for AI agents, real-world assets and broader Web3 applications, not simply another blockchain for basic smart contracts.
The Big Opportunity Is Ethereum Compatibility
Ethereum remains the dominant environment for smart-contract development.
Developers have access to an enormous ecosystem of Solidity and Vyper tooling, libraries, wallets and frameworks. VeChain’s strategy is therefore not to build a completely separate developer environment but to make VeChainThor increasingly compatible with what developers already use.
VeChain’s roadmap describes Interstellar as a move toward full EVM compatibility and JSON-RPC equivalence, with the longer-term goal of allowing common Ethereum development tools such as Hardhat, Foundry, MetaMask and Ethers.js to work more naturally with VeChainThor.
VIP-255 is an important step in that direction.

It does not deliver complete Ethereum equivalence by itself. Instead, it closes another portion of the compatibility gap.
That distinction matters.
The bigger Interstellar roadmap extends beyond this individual vote, meaning developers and investors should view VIP-255 as part of a larger technical transition rather than the final upgrade.
VeChain Is Keeping Its Own Architecture
One of the more interesting aspects of the proposal is that VeChain is not simply copying Ethereum.
VeChainThor has its own architecture, including multi-clause transactions, fee delegation, a dual-token model and its own block-ID structure.
VIP-255 is designed to introduce applicable Ethereum improvements while keeping those characteristics intact. VeChain says transient storage and updated SELFDESTRUCT behavior will therefore account for its multi-clause architecture, while historical block queries will return VeChainThor block IDs.
Blob transactions and blob-related opcodes are also not part of this proposal.
That means Interstellar is better described as Ethereum compatibility adapted for VeChainThor, rather than an attempt to turn VeChain into Ethereum.
For developers, that could be an important distinction.
The Vote Is Now the Key Event
VIP-255 is going through VeChain’s governance process.
The announced voting period runs from August 10 at 00:00 UTC through August 17 at 00:00 UTC. Eligible stakeholders can participate through VeVote, with VeChain identifying validators and eligible StarGate NFT holders as participants in the governance process.
VeChain’s governance system allows stakeholders to approve or reject protocol upgrades, with proposals moving through support, creation, promotion and approval stages.

If the proposal passes, the compatible Thor client release and activation details will follow.
Node operators, validators, exchanges and infrastructure providers will then need to upgrade before the activation block.
Ordinary VET and VTHO holders do not need to migrate their tokens or change addresses. VeChain says VIP-255 does not alter VET or VTHO supply, issuance, burning rules, staking rewards or existing token contracts.
What Could VIP-255 Mean for VET?
The upgrade itself does not guarantee a VET price increase.
That is important for investors.
Technical upgrades can improve a blockchain without immediately creating additional token demand. For VET, the bigger question is whether improved compatibility attracts more developers, applications and users to VeChainThor.
That is where Interstellar becomes more interesting.
If Ethereum developers can bring applications to VeChainThor with fewer technical changes, the network could become easier to access. If that leads to more activity, applications and real-world use, the fundamental case for VET could strengthen.
VeChain is already positioning the wider 2026 roadmap around AI agents, real-world assets, digital identity and on-chain asset attestation.
Interstellar provides part of the infrastructure needed to support that strategy.
The Bigger VeChain Renaissance
The sequence of VeChain’s recent upgrades is worth remembering.
Galactica modernized the fee market.
Hayabusa moved VeChainThor toward permissionless delegated proof-of-stake and introduced the StarGate staking system. VeChain says total VET staked through StarGate has grown substantially since launch.
Now Interstellar is focused on compatibility and developer access.
That creates a fairly clear progression:
Economics → consensus → compatibility → applications.
The final part is arguably the most important.
A technically advanced blockchain still needs developers to build on it and users to interact with those applications.
If VeChain succeeds in making VeChainThor increasingly familiar to Ethereum developers, the network could remove one of the biggest barriers to ecosystem growth.
What the Community Should Watch
For VET holders, VIP-255 is worth following, but the vote is only the beginning.
The more important milestones will come afterward:
- Whether VIP-255 is approved.
- When the upgraded Thor client is released.
- When Interstellar activates on mainnet.
- Whether Ethereum developers begin deploying more applications on VeChainThor.
- Progress toward JSON-RPC equivalence.
- Growth in real-world assets and AI-agent applications.
- Whether greater compatibility translates into measurable network activity.
Those developments will tell the community whether Interstellar is simply another technical upgrade or a genuine growth catalyst.
For now, the direction is clear.
VeChain is trying to make VeChainThor easier to build on, easier to integrate with and more connected to the wider Ethereum ecosystem.
VIP-255 is the first major step.
And if the broader Interstellar roadmap delivers on its ambitions, VeChain could enter its next phase with something the network has been missing for years: a much lower barrier for developers already building across Ethereum and the wider EVM ecosystem.
For VET holders, that may ultimately matter more than any short-term price prediction.
