Privacy-focused cryptocurrency Zcash has completed a comprehensive security review conducted with Anthropic’s advanced Mythos artificial intelligence model, with the audit finding no additional serious vulnerabilities in the protocol.
The announcement was made by Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox, who thanked Anthropic for assisting with the review and helping strengthen protections for Zcash users. The audit was commissioned by Shielded Labs, an independent organization that supports the development and security of the Zcash ecosystem. According to Wilcox, the review did not uncover any new critical or serious bugs within the Zcash protocol. Shielded Labs and other contributors are continuing security hardening efforts, with additional updates expected in the future.
The development comes at an important time for Zcash, which recently faced one of the most significant security incidents in its history. Earlier this month, developers disclosed a vulnerability in the Orchard shielded pool, a core privacy component of the network. The issue was discovered by security researcher Taylor Hornby with assistance from Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 model, demonstrating the growing role of advanced AI systems in identifying complex software vulnerabilities.
Audit Follows Discovery of Orchard Vulnerability
The latest Mythos review was conducted after Zcash developers successfully addressed the Orchard vulnerability through an emergency network upgrade.
According to the Zcash Foundation, the flaw had existed for several years and could have posed a risk to the network’s integrity. However, developers moved quickly after its discovery, temporarily suspending Orchard transactions while implementing a fix. The foundation stated there was no evidence that the vulnerability had ever been exploited, no unauthorized creation of ZEC occurred, and user privacy remained intact throughout the incident.

Following the patch, Shielded Labs sought additional assurance by requesting a broader review using Anthropic’s Mythos model. The AI-powered audit examined the protocol for further serious vulnerabilities and ultimately concluded without identifying any additional critical issues.
The result provides a degree of reassurance for users and developers who were concerned that the Orchard vulnerability might have indicated deeper security weaknesses within the network.
AI Security Audits Gain Ground in Crypto
The audit also highlights the rapidly expanding role of artificial intelligence in blockchain security.
Anthropic’s Mythos model has attracted significant attention across the technology industry because of its ability to analyze large codebases and identify software vulnerabilities that may be difficult for traditional auditing methods to detect. Earlier this year, Anthropic revealed that Mythos had identified thousands of high-severity vulnerabilities across critical software systems, leading to increased interest in AI-assisted security reviews.

For Zcash, the successful completion of the audit marks another milestone in its ongoing efforts to maintain one of the cryptocurrency sector’s most sophisticated privacy infrastructures. The network, which uses zero-knowledge proofs to enable private transactions, has long relied on extensive cryptographic research and independent security reviews to safeguard user privacy and network integrity.
Wilcox noted that the Mythos review is not the end of the process. Shielded Labs and other contributors are continuing to strengthen the protocol through additional security measures, audits, and ongoing research. While no software system can ever be considered completely risk-free, the clean audit result provides an encouraging signal for the Zcash community following the recent Orchard incident.
