VeChain is preparing for one of its most significant technical upgrades of 2026, with VIP-255, also known as Interstellar, scheduled to go live at block height 25,902,540 on September 16.
The upgrade brings together 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals, or EIPs, designed to improve Ethereum compatibility while strengthening the underlying infrastructure of the VeChainThor blockchain.
VeChain has spent recent days explaining the different components of the upgrade, including new EVM opcodes, cryptographic precompiles and the core protocol improvements that support them.
The final group of changes focuses on a less visible but equally important area: keeping the network fast, predictable and accessible as activity grows.
Core Protocol Changes Aim to Keep VeChainThor Predictable
One of the changes arriving with VIP-255 is EIP-2935, which provides access to historical block hashes through a contract covering the most recent 8,191 blocks.
VeChainThor already stores this historical information through its Extension built-in contract, meaning the change primarily improves compatibility with Ethereum’s existing interface and tooling.
For developers, this could reduce the need for VeChain-specific modifications when building proof systems, light clients and other applications originally designed around Ethereum standards.

The upgrade also introduces EIP-7825, placing a hard gas limit of 16,777,216 on individual transactions. The goal is to prevent a single transaction from consuming an excessive portion of a block’s computational capacity.
This is particularly relevant to VeChainThor because its multi-clause transaction model can allow complex transactions to contain several operations. Bounding the worst-case execution requirements could help maintain more consistent 10-second block times during periods of increased network demand.
EIP-7934 adds another important safeguard by setting an 8 MiB maximum encoded block size. Gas limits alone do not necessarily prevent blocks from becoming physically large due to data-heavy transactions.
By introducing a byte-level limit, VeChain aims to control block propagation requirements and help ensure that running a node remains feasible without increasingly expensive infrastructure.
Why the Interstellar Upgrade Matters for VeChain’s Growth
Taken together, these changes address an important challenge for any blockchain seeking broader adoption: improving capabilities without sacrificing network reliability or decentralization.
New opcodes and cryptographic tools can expand what developers are able to build, but those improvements become less valuable if higher activity leads to unpredictable execution or rapidly rising infrastructure costs.
The VIP-255 upgrade therefore combines developer-facing improvements with structural safeguards intended to keep VeChainThor stable as usage expands.

VIP-255 is scheduled for activation on September 16, 2026, subject to the network reaching the estimated block height at the expected time. The upgrade represents the completion of an 11-EIP package spanning new execution capabilities, cryptographic improvements and core protocol protections.
