IOTA Price Outlook: Can Its Network and Trade Infrastructure Drive Real Adoption?

IOTA

IOTA is taking a different route in the increasingly crowded Layer 1 blockchain market. While networks such as Sui, Aptos and Hedera compete for developers, liquidity and institutional attention, IOTA is building its identity around global trade, digital infrastructure and the tokenization of real-world assets. Its ambition is to make blockchain useful beyond crypto-native applications.

The strategy is backed by a significant technical transformation. IOTA Rebased moved the network away from its earlier architecture and introduced Move smart contracts, Delegated Proof of Stake, validator-based security and parallel transaction execution. The upgrade also introduced native staking and transaction fees, giving the IOTA token a more direct role in network operations.

That transformation puts IOTA in a more familiar competitive category. Move is already associated with Sui and Aptos, giving developers access to a programming language designed around secure digital asset management. Its resource-oriented approach helps developers define how assets are created, transferred and controlled. However, sharing a programming language with established ecosystems does not automatically attract their developers or applications.

IOTA’s more distinctive proposition is its focus on international trade. Global commerce still depends on fragmented documentation, repeated data entry, manual verification and coordination between businesses, logistics providers, financial institutions and government agencies. These processes create delays and make it difficult for smaller companies to access trade finance.

The Trade Worldwide Information Network (TWIN) is central to IOTA’s response. Built on IOTA infrastructure, it is designed to support the exchange of verified digital trade information across borders. Its applications include digital documentation, supply chain data and trade-related processes. The IOTA Foundation’s 2026 updates describe progress involving Kenya, the United Kingdom and the African Digital Access and Public Infrastructure for Trade initiative, or ADAPT.

This focus could give IOTA an advantage that is not easily measured through conventional DeFi rankings. If businesses and public institutions use its infrastructure to coordinate real shipments, verify documents and exchange commercial information, the network could develop a role beyond hosting speculative tokens. However, partnerships and deployments must translate into recurring usage and commercially sustainable services before they can be treated as proof of broad adoption.

IOTA’s Technology, Tokenomics and Valuation

The Rebased architecture also changes the economic relationship between the network and its native token. IOTA is used to pay transaction fees, participate in staking and support validator security. Users can delegate tokens to validators, while validators process transactions and help secure the network. A portion of transaction fees is burned, while staking rewards include newly issued tokens.

This introduces an important consideration for investors: IOTA no longer operates under the assumptions of its original fixed-supply model. Its technical and tokenomics whitepaper describes an initial Rebased supply of 4.6 billion tokens and a mechanism that can mint up to 767,000 IOTA per epoch. At the maximum issuance rate, the first year’s potential supply increase was approximately 6.1%, before accounting for token burning.

The latest public network explorer snapshot available for this analysis showed approximately 5.02 billion IOTA in total supply and 4.72 billion in circulating supply. It also reported around 2.38 billion IOTA staked, equivalent to approximately 47.5% of supply. These figures are a snapshot rather than permanent values, but they show why investors should examine current supply and issuance instead of relying on older tokenomics descriptions.

Valuation scenarios illustrate the scale of the opportunity and the challenge. At an illustrative supply of five billion tokens, IOTA at $0.10 would represent a $500 million valuation, while $0.25 would imply $1.25 billion. A price of $0.50 would imply $2.5 billion, $1 would imply $5 billion, and $2 would imply $10 billion. These are mathematical scenarios, not forecasts or price targets. The actual valuation would depend on the supply at the time.

The central investment question is whether network activity can create enough demand to offset continuing issuance. More developers, applications, transactions and institutional integrations could strengthen the ecosystem. Yet low transaction fees do not automatically produce substantial token demand, particularly if businesses can sponsor fees for their users or if network activity remains limited.

Catalysts, Risks and the Long-Term Outlook

IOTA has several potential catalysts: expansion of TWIN, progress in African trade digitalization, more Move developers, decentralized finance growth, tokenized assets and additional institutional integrations. Its global trade strategy is particularly interesting because it targets problems that businesses already spend money and resources trying to solve.

The risks are equally important. IOTA faces competition from Sui, Aptos and other Layer 1 networks with established developer communities. Enterprise adoption can take years, while technical upgrades do not guarantee commercial success. Token issuance, limited liquidity, weak application activity and uncertain value capture could also restrict the token’s performance even if the underlying technology improves.

My assessment: Narrative 8/10, technology 9/10, utility potential 8/10, adoption 6/10, tokenomics 6/10, with very high investment risk. These are subjective assessments, not independently measured scores. IOTA is an ambitious infrastructure project with a credible reason to pursue real-world trade, but its long-term investment case will depend on whether that ambition becomes measurable economic activity. For me, the interesting bet is not simply another Layer 1 blockchain. It is whether businesses will eventually find IOTA useful enough to build essential parts of their operations on it.
