VeChain Interstellar Goes Live With Major EVM Upgrade for Developers
VeChain has officially activated its Interstellar upgrade, bringing a major update to the VeChainThor blockchain’s Ethereum Virtual Machine capabilities. The upgrade is designed to make the network more compatible with modern Ethereum development standards and reduce the technical friction developers face when building on VeChainThor.
Interstellar is more than a routine network update. It moves VeChainThor’s EVM forward by adopting changes from Ethereum’s Cancun, Prague and Osaka releases in a single hardfork, giving developers access to newer instructions and cryptographic capabilities.
Interstellar Brings VeChainThor Closer to Modern Ethereum
Before Interstellar, VeChainThor’s EVM was aligned with Ethereum’s Shanghai release through the earlier Galactica upgrade. The new hardfork closes much of that gap by adding several features that modern Solidity and Vyper development can rely on.
Among the most important additions are the TLOAD and TSTORE transient-storage opcodes, the MCOPY memory-copying instruction and the CLZ count-leading-zeros opcode. These are not simply cosmetic changes because newer development tools and smart-contract code can make use of such instructions.
Interstellar also introduces new cryptographic precompiles, including support for BLS12-381 curve operations and secp256r1 signature verification. Those capabilities are relevant to applications involving advanced cryptography, interoperability, signature verification and passkey-style authentication.

The changes are intended to make VeChainThor more familiar to developers already working in the Ethereum ecosystem. Instead of requiring teams to work around older EVM functionality, the network now supports a broader set of primitives used by current development environments.
That is the central idea behind VeChain’s developer strategy. A blockchain can have strong infrastructure, but developers still need accessible tools and familiar execution environments before they are likely to experiment with it.
Interstellar does not make VeChainThor completely equivalent to Ethereum. Ethereum transaction equivalence is explicitly excluded from VIP-255 and is planned for a separate future upgrade. Blob transactions and related Ethereum features are also not included in the current fork.
The Upgrade Could Expand VeChainThor’s Developer Funnel
The Interstellar hardfork activated on VeChainThor mainnet at block 25,902,540 at approximately 11:15 UTC on September 16. The v2.5.0 node release was mandatory for operators ahead of the activation.
For developers, the significance is less about the hardfork itself and more about what becomes possible afterward. New EVM functionality can reduce the amount of custom infrastructure required to port contracts, use newer libraries or implement applications that depend on modern cryptographic primitives.
VeChain’s technical documentation specifically notes that the previous gap between VeChainThor and newer Ethereum releases increased the friction involved in deploying existing Ethereum contracts. Interstellar is intended to reduce that gap.
The potential impact therefore extends beyond individual smart contracts. A lower technical barrier can make VeChainThor easier for developers to evaluate alongside other EVM-compatible networks, although compatibility alone does not guarantee that teams will choose the blockchain or that applications will attract users.
For VET holders, the upgrade is primarily an infrastructure development rather than a direct token catalyst. VET remains the network’s primary asset, while VTHO is used for transaction gas. Greater developer activity could eventually affect network usage, but that depends on actual applications, users and transaction demand rather than the upgrade itself.
The launch also gives VeChain a new technical foundation for the next stage of its roadmap. The project has spent much of its history emphasizing real-world applications, and Interstellar attempts to pair that focus with a broader developer environment.
The result is a more modern VeChainThor EVM with newer opcodes, cryptographic precompiles and Ethereum-aligned execution features. Whether that translates into a larger developer ecosystem will depend on what builders create with the new infrastructure.
For now, Interstellar marks a clear change in VeChainThor’s technical position. The network has moved substantially closer to current Ethereum EVM standards, giving developers more familiar tools while leaving full Ethereum transaction equivalence for a later stage.
