Zcash NU7 Upgrade Targets November 5 Mainnet Launch With 25-Second Blocks
Zcash is moving toward one of its most significant network upgrades of 2026, with NU7 targeting a November 5 mainnet activation. The upgrade is designed to reduce Zcash block spacing from the current 75 seconds to 25 seconds, giving the network a substantially faster block production schedule.
The next major milestone comes on October 6, when NU7 is scheduled to activate on the official Zcash testnet. Developers will use the testnet period to evaluate the upgrade before the ecosystem reaches the final mainnet decision point on October 20.
Zcash Moves Toward 25-Second Blocks
The reduction in block time is being introduced through ZIP-218. If activated as planned, Zcash would move from producing a block roughly every 75 seconds to one every 25 seconds, effectively tripling the frequency at which new blocks are produced.
The change is aimed at improving the network’s transaction experience and infrastructure responsiveness. Faster block production does not automatically mean transactions become instant or achieve immediate finality, but it can reduce the time between successive opportunities for transactions to be included in blocks.
The proposal has been a major part of the NU7 discussion throughout 2026. Earlier Zcash community discussions specifically examined whether reducing the block target from 75 seconds to 25 seconds could be implemented safely as part of the upgrade.

The latest timeline indicates that the major organizations and engineering teams involved in the Zcash ecosystem have reached agreement on the NU7 schedule. The plan now calls for testnet activation on October 6 followed by a mainnet activation target of November 5.
The October 20 milestone remains important because the mainnet activation height and final decision are expected to be set after the team has gained experience with NU7 on testnet. This creates a defined testing window between the October 6 activation and the final mainnet decision.
What NU7 Means for Zcash
NU7 is not limited to block-time changes. The current scope also includes disabling version 4 transactions and integrating the Network Security Mechanism through ZIP-234 and ZIP-235, while the ecosystem has agreed to preserve the existing halving structure with reintroduction planned for February 2031.
Importantly, the upgrade is not introducing a new transaction format. The Zcash Community Forum timeline says the changes should not significantly affect wallets, although infrastructure such as full nodes, indexers and block explorers may require attention from their operators.
That distinction matters for ZEC users. A protocol upgrade can be technically significant without requiring ordinary wallet holders to take extensive action, while exchanges, infrastructure providers and node operators may have more work to ensure compatibility with the new network rules.
The 25-second target also comes as Zcash developers continue working on broader performance improvements. Recent community discussions have explored faster networking and transaction confirmation, with some developers arguing that even 25-second blocks may not be sufficient for every real-world payment scenario.
For ZEC, NU7 could therefore become an important infrastructure milestone rather than simply another scheduled software update. Faster block production, updated consensus rules and continued work on network performance could influence how developers and service providers assess the chain’s usability.
The immediate focus, however, remains testing. October 6 is the key date for NU7’s testnet activation, while October 20 is scheduled for the final mainnet decision and November 5 remains the target for mainnet activation. Until those milestones are completed, the timeline should be treated as a planned rollout rather than a guaranteed outcome.
