Democrats Prepare World Liberty Financial Probe After Winning House Majority

trump

Democrats are preparing to investigate President Donald Trump’s family cryptocurrency businesses after winning control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections. World Liberty Financial, the Trump-linked crypto venture behind the USD1 stablecoin, is expected to attract early scrutiny, alongside questions surrounding Trump’s pardon of Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao.

Representative Robert Garcia, who is expected to become chairman of the House Oversight Committee, has indicated that investigations into Trump’s family business dealings will be a priority. The committee is expected to examine the president’s cryptocurrency ventures, financial relationships with investors and potential conflicts between private business interests and government decisions.

The Democratic victory gives the party control of House committees and their investigative powers when the new Congress convenes on January 3, 2027. This includes the ability to request records, hold hearings and issue subpoenas. Garcia has already signaled an aggressive approach, responding to the election result with the message “Lawyer up.”

World Liberty Financial is among the businesses attracting attention because of its connections to the Trump family and its expanding cryptocurrency operations. The company has developed USD1, a dollar-pegged stablecoin launched in March 2025, and has pursued institutional adoption through partnerships and major financial transactions. Its commercial activities have created questions about the relationship between the president’s private financial interests and the administration’s regulatory responsibilities.

World Liberty Financial and USD1 Face Congressional Scrutiny

One issue likely to attract attention is a reported $500 million investment involving an Abu Dhabi-linked entity and World Liberty Financial. The arrangement has raised questions among Democratic lawmakers about foreign investment, ownership interests and potential national security implications. Lawmakers previously asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to examine the transaction, but their requests as minority members did not carry the same compulsory authority available to a committee chair.

The company’s stablecoin is another potential focus. USD1 was used in a reported $2 billion transaction involving an investment in Binance by Abu Dhabi’s MGX. The transaction brought together a Trump-connected stablecoin, a major cryptocurrency exchange and a foreign investment deal, creating questions about the financial relationships involved. Reuters has also reported that USD1 had grown to approximately $4 billion in market capitalization by mid-2026.

The investigation could examine how these arrangements were structured, who benefited financially and whether any business relationships overlapped with government decisions. These are questions for congressional investigators to establish through documents and testimony, rather than evidence that wrongdoing has already occurred. World Liberty Financial and the individuals involved have not been found guilty of misconduct simply because their transactions are subject to political scrutiny.

Zhao’s Pardon Brings Binance Back Into the Picture

Trump’s October 2025 pardon of Zhao is another issue Democrats have identified for review. Zhao pleaded guilty in 2023 to violating the Bank Secrecy Act by failing to maintain an effective anti-money-laundering program at Binance. He received a four-month prison sentence before Trump later granted him a presidential pardon.

The connection to World Liberty Financial comes through Binance’s involvement with USD1. The exchange supported the stablecoin’s adoption, including its role in the reported MGX transaction. That relationship has prompted questions about whether Binance’s commercial dealings with Trump-linked businesses had any connection to the subsequent pardon.

However, the available reporting does not establish that Zhao personally negotiated the stablecoin’s launch or that the pardon was exchanged for business support. Zhao has said he had no business ties to the Trump family and did not discuss clemency with them. Any investigation would need to establish the relevant communications, financial arrangements and decision-making processes before drawing conclusions.

For the cryptocurrency industry, the proposed investigations could extend beyond the Trump family’s businesses. Binance, stablecoin issuers, foreign investors and financial institutions connected to the transactions may face requests for information. The inquiries could also add political pressure to an already difficult environment for crypto legislation, particularly as lawmakers continue debating market-structure rules.

The incoming Democratic majority has not announced a final investigative timetable for every target. While World Liberty Financial has been identified as a likely early focus, the timing and scope of individual inquiries remain subject to committee decisions after the new Congress takes office. The central issue will be whether investigators can establish documented links between private crypto transactions, presidential decisions and the pardon process.
