The IOTA ecosystem continues to expand with new decentralized applications after Barba unveiled the first preview of its hybrid decentralized crypto messenger built on the IOTA blockchain. The project aims to deliver a privacy-focused communication platform that replaces traditional phone number registration with blockchain-based identities while integrating several native IOTA technologies.
According to the development team, the upcoming messenger combines decentralized identity, NFT customization, fee-free transactions, and on-chain messaging into a single application. The announcement also revealed plans to migrate Barba’s existing voting platform to the IOTA Rebased Mainnet, opening the door for additional integrations such as Pyth Network.
Barba Brings Multiple Native IOTA Features Into One Messaging Platform
One of the standout features of the new messenger is its integration with IOTA Names, allowing users to create permanent blockchain-based usernames instead of relying on phone numbers or centralized accounts. This approach gives users complete ownership of their digital identity while reducing privacy concerns associated with traditional messaging applications.
The messenger also incorporates IOTA NFTs, enabling users to customize their avatars with blockchain-based digital assets that they fully own. Unlike conventional profile pictures stored on centralized servers, these avatars remain tied directly to users’ blockchain identities.

To improve accessibility, Barba has integrated the IOTA Gas Station, which covers 100% of transaction fees generated within the application. This removes one of the common barriers to blockchain adoption by allowing users to interact with the network without worrying about maintaining token balances solely for gas payments.
Another notable feature is the ability to send BARBA token tips directly inside conversations. These transfers are processed on-chain, allowing users to exchange value instantly while remaining within the messaging application.
The preview also showcased real-time typing indicators, demonstrating that blockchain-based applications can offer familiar user experiences alongside decentralized infrastructure.
On-Chain Identity and Future Integrations Expand the IOTA Ecosystem
Barba says every identity and interaction inside the messenger is validated on-chain, creating a system designed to reduce spam, bots, and fake accounts. By combining decentralized identities with blockchain verification, the platform aims to establish trusted communication without depending on centralized intermediaries.
Beyond messaging, the project has also confirmed that its LissenBarba Voting App will migrate to the IOTA Rebased Mainnet. This transition is expected to unlock additional capabilities, including planned integration with Pyth Network.
According to the developers, Pyth integration will allow live external data to be securely delivered and anchored on-chain. The team envisions future applications spanning areas such as sports, financial markets, and even political polling, where verifiable data and transparent voting mechanisms could play a larger role.
