Digital asset infrastructure provider BitGo has announced that it will migrate Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) from its legacy cross-chain solution to Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), making CCIP the exclusive interoperability framework for WBTC and future BitGo-issued digital assets.
The move represents one of the most significant infrastructure upgrades for the world’s largest wrapped Bitcoin asset, which BitGo says secures more than $7.7 billion in value. Under the new strategy, future assets issued by BitGo will also adopt Chainlink CCIP by default, creating a standardized framework for moving assets across multiple blockchain networks.
BitGo said it selected Chainlink following an extensive review of interoperability solutions, ultimately choosing CCIP because of its security architecture, operational standards, and issuer-controlled risk management capabilities. The company will retire its legacy bridging infrastructure as part of the transition.
The announcement underscores the growing importance of secure cross-chain infrastructure as tokenized assets continue expanding across multiple blockchain ecosystems. Rather than maintaining separate interoperability solutions for different assets, BitGo aims to standardize future deployments under a single framework.
Security Becomes Central to Cross-Chain Infrastructure
Cross-chain bridges have become essential components of decentralized finance by allowing digital assets to move between blockchain networks. However, they have also been among the industry’s most frequently targeted pieces of infrastructure, with bridge exploits accounting for billions of dollars in cryptocurrency losses over the past several years.
Against that backdrop, institutional firms have increasingly prioritized security, operational controls, and standardized risk management when selecting interoperability providers.

According to BitGo, Chainlink CCIP offers several features that influenced its decision, including decentralized node operators, configurable issuer-controlled transfer limits, and compliance certifications such as SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. The company also noted that CCIP allows issuers to retain ownership of token deployments while adding their own security controls where necessary.
BitGo also plans to adopt Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Token (CCT) standard to establish canonical WBTC deployments across supported blockchains, providing a consistent framework for future expansion.
Mike Belshe, BitGo’s CEO and co-founder, said the company selected CCIP because it aligns with the institutional security, reliability, and operational standards expected by its clients. Johann Eid, Chief Business Officer at Chainlink Labs, described the migration as another milestone in expanding secure interoperability across decentralized finance.
Migration Reflects Growing Institutional Focus on Secure Tokenization
The decision highlights a broader shift within the digital asset industry as institutional participants increasingly demand standardized infrastructure for tokenized assets.
Wrapped Bitcoin remains one of the largest tokenized representations of Bitcoin on smart contract platforms, enabling BTC holders to participate in decentralized finance applications while maintaining Bitcoin-backed exposure.
As more institutions issue tokenized assets across multiple blockchain networks, interoperability has become a critical component of market infrastructure. Rather than relying on proprietary or fragmented bridging systems, firms are increasingly seeking common standards that provide consistent security controls across ecosystems.

BitGo said the adoption of Chainlink CCIP establishes a unified interoperability framework for both WBTC and future tokenized assets, supporting secure cross-chain transfers while simplifying operational management.
The migration also reinforces Chainlink’s growing role within blockchain infrastructure beyond decentralized oracles. CCIP has increasingly been adopted for cross-chain messaging, token transfers, and interoperability between decentralized applications and institutional asset issuers.
Although BitGo has announced its intention to transition WBTC to CCIP, the migration will occur as part of an implementation process rather than an immediate network-wide change.
If completed successfully, the move could establish a new interoperability standard for one of the cryptocurrency market’s largest tokenized assets while further strengthening institutional adoption of standardized cross-chain infrastructure.
